Being a parent is one of the most challenging roles you will ever have. Ironically, there is little to no training for the position. Instead, you are expected to learn everything on the job, skip meals and work 24-hour shifts without breaks, compensation or vacation time. It is no wonder parents often feel confused, exhausted and overwhelmed.
When my husband and I became parents, I experienced these overwhelming feelings firsthand. Even my professional experience as a counselor could not protect me from the havoc of postpartum depression and the challenges of caring for a colicky baby. As we gradually found our way with our spirited child, I became increasingly intrigued with the transition to parenthood.
Drawing from my experience as a parent and my career as a counselor and educator, I work with parents and families on a range issues including…
- sleeping
- eating
- potty training
- tantrums
- power struggles
- physicality
- sibling rivalry
- school success
- discipline
- responsibility
- at-risk teen behavior
Though I am well versed in a variety of parenting models, I am much more interested in gaining a clear understanding of your unique parenting situation:
What do you find most challenging? What are your needs and goals? What is the temperament of your child and how does that affect his or her behavior? What needs could your child be trying to meet through his or her behavior?
As we explore these questions, we determine the tools and techniques best suited to you and your family. We then put these new ideas into practice with coaching along the way to ensure success. The sessions are also a chance to “recharge” so you can parent more calmly and effectively - and more fully enjoy this unique time in your life.
