Parents and Children

Parent Consultation

Despite our best efforts, there are times when we all feel at a loss to understand and get along with our children. After all being a parent is one of the most challenging and life changing roles we will ever have. And it is an impossible job to do perfectly.

Much of parenting is truly trial and error. So It is no wonder as parents we often feel confused and overwhelmed. Drawing from my 20 years of experience as a parent educator, psychotherapist, and parent myself, I have created a highly interactive and skill-based approach to parent consultation that is customized to meet your specific needs and concerns.

Orange Blossom

Beginning with a 50-minute parent intake session, we discuss your parenting goals, current parenting challenges and hot spots, and pertinent background history. We dialogue about relevant information related to child development, temperament, co-regulation, and relational dynamics. Then, we collaborate on new skills, techniques and routines you can use at home. Follow-up parent sessions, and/or parent-child sessions, are scheduled as needed with a frequency that fits for you.

Parent and Child Play Sessions

Parent and Child Play Sessions offer a rich opportunity to learn more about your child and your relationship, and deepen your connection. During an initial parent meeting we discuss the specific needs and challenges your child is experiencing. Then, we discuss the structure for a parent-child session that include several optimal play activities, how you will introduce and invite your child to participate, and other related questions.

During the parent-child session, we begin and end with some discussion, but most of the session time is spent engaging through play. We play to connect. We play to gain new perspectives. We play to clarify and resolve misunderstandings or misperceptions.  We play to learn new skills. We play to better understand ourselves, our child, and our relationship.

Parents find that sessions increase their child's and their own capacity to be more present, compassionate, skillful and responsive in previously charged situations.

At the conclusion of the play session, you and your child choose one or two activities to use at home. Further play sessions are scheduled as needed.

Some intentional play can go a long way!
